A gem of Salt Lake City’s music scene, Hot House West Swing Orchestra grew from a seed planted by two students during their time in the University of Utah School of Music. This month, UtahPresents brings the fourteen-piece group home to Kingsbury Hall.

U School of Music associate professor Jane Hatter is spending the year abroad at the Villa I Tatti in Florence, Italy as a 2023-2024 CRIA Fellow in The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a special presentation of Sonic Blossom, a participatory artwork by Taiwanese-American artist Lee Mingwei. Sonic Blossom is a performance-based project that allows local, classically trained singers to offer a spontaneous gift of song to museum visitors in the UMFA galleries.

This summer, School of Music students traveled to the 2022 Saarburg Festival, where they performed demanding repertoire in a multitude of venues across Germany and Luxembourg.

Recent graduate from the University of Utah School of Music, Connor P. Brown, has received the distinguished 2022-23 Fulbright Award, and was selected to be a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in the Nordrhein-Westfalen region of Germany. Brown earned BA degrees in both German and Music, and focused heavily on piano performance while at the U.

Performing Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” with the University of Utah opera program has been a long-held aspiration for director Robert Breault. Beyond its cultural popularity, moody environment, and complex characters, the show allows for broad collaboration and interdisciplinary participation.

School of Music Assistant Professor, Paul Sherrill's article "Susanna's 'Deh vieni'" was published in the journal Music Theory Online, vol. 24 no. 4 (Dec. 2018). On Nov. 8, the American Musicological Society awarded Sherrill the Roland Jackson Award during its 2020 annual conference. The award recognizes an article "of exceptional merit in the field of music analysis."

On July 17th, musicians from around the country will come together to create an online musical experience in honor of their colleague and friend, Jed Moss, commemorating the first anniversary of his untimely death.

The School of Music Director of Bands, Scott Hagen, will be retiring Fall 2020 after 29 years of service. Professor Hagen started teaching at the University of Utah in 1991, became an Associate Professor in 2002, and the Director of Bands in 2005. He teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and serves on numerous committees­ for the department. The School of Music will be celebrating Professor Hagen’s achievements this fall. Sparked by her recent research for her upcoming monograph, Assistant Professor Elizabeth Craft has written an informative piece on musical theater and the 1918 flu pandemic.

Before they all graduated (and before COVID-19 drastically changed their final semester), they came together to record. “My favorite part of recording the EP was being able to share that space with my friends during our final year at the University of Utah. We've all worked really hard to get to where we are musically and it was really nice to see that all come together and to have something documented that demonstrates our passion for music,” vocalist Anaïs Chantal Samuels reflected.

The School of Music’s annual SOMe Festival is a celebratory concert organized by the students, for the students. At the end of each academic year the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) reviews student performances to be featured in Libby Gardner Concert Hall.

Associate Professor (Lecturer) Cathy Clayton has fifteen years' experience with online teaching, and she offers her insights during this time of remote learning.

The University of Utah has proactively monitored and responded to daily developments as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread in Utah and across the United States. As was announced by President Watkins on March 12, 2020, classes at the University of Utah are cancelled Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17 (after Spring Break). The University of Utah will shift to all-online instruction beginning March 18 for the rest of spring semester. All School of Music concerts, and all other public events, are cancelled through April 29th, 2020, except for student recitals that are required to be completed this semester for graduation. These student recitals will not be open to the public, except through online streaming. The School of Music Office, the McKay Music Library, and School of Music practice rooms will remain open. However, we encourage students to take advantage of technologies that allow them to receive instruction while not being physically present on campus. Students who are away from campus are encouraged not to travel back. Our highest priority remains the health and safety of our students.

Rod Davis is the vice president of Music Business Affairs for Sony Pictures Entertainment. In this role, Davis is responsible for handling music transactions from negotiations for composers, musicians, and music supervisors, to recording artists and soundtrack album agreements for feature films, television series, game shows and interstitial works. Davis earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah School of Music, his master’s in Music at University of Southern California, and his J.D. at Southwestern University School Law School. Prior to his work at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Davis acted as senior counsel to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, handling music rights and transactions for the studio.

For David Park, School of Music Adjunct Professor, 2020 will be a landmark year for violin performance.

On February 25 – 26, an 1,850-minute-long philanthropy celebration will take over the University of Utah campus, in honor of the University’s Founders Day. In only its 2nd year of existence, U Giving Day was created not only to raise money for the students of the University of Utah but to also educate our students and faculty on various philanthropy efforts.

University of Utah’s Utah Philharmonia will channel the mystique of supernatural folklore at this year’s “Haunted Orchestra: Myths and Legends,” Oct. 24-25 in Libby Gardner Concert Hall.

When Dr. Robert Breault taught David Sauer as a voice student in the University of Utah’s School of Music, he couldn’t predict that this student would one day hire him to direct a familiar opera where he would work alongside several of his former and current students in a professional production.

Jed Moss spent his career generously sharing his talent with artists of many types and skill levels. In that spirit, his colleagues, friends, and family are establishing a collaborative piano scholarship at the University of Utah to continue his legacy.

Casey Overfield has played tuba in the University of Utah’s Marching Band for three years. A Communications major originally from Northern California, Overfield immediately connected with the camaraderie of the Marching Band. A valued and committed member of the band since her first moments here on campus, she exemplifies the value of the arts within interdisciplinary studies.

The School of Music’s Red Hot! Performers are expanding in hopes of bringing more live classical and jazz music to events all over the U’s campus and in the wider Salt Lake City community.

On September 19th, the University of Utah’s premiere orchestra, the 85-member Utah Philharmonia will perform with students from the prestigious Wuhan University in China in a concert that explores cultural musical traditions and builds international student relationships.

The 47th Annual National Flute Association Convention came to Salt Lake City this past week. In attendance at the Salt Palace were hundreds of flutists from all over the world, many presenting or performing as soloists, in flute orchestras, or in chamber groups. Some flute choirs were featured in showcase concerts. The School of Music’s own Runnin’ Fl’UTES secured a concert spot in the convention and performed on the morning of 3 August.

Piano Area Head, Ning Lu hosted the first-ever Helen Taylor Johannsen International Piano Competition and University of Utah Music Academy to occur overseas, in Hong Kong, and Guangzhou, China.

Faith, sacrifice, and redemption transpire throughout one of Francis Poulenc’s most profound works, Dialogues des Carmélites. The University of Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble and the Utah Philharmonia will perform this opera on April 19-20 at Kingsbury Hall.

Founded just over eighteen years ago and named for one of the University of Utah’s first music graduates, the Emma Ray Riggs McKay Music Library is nestled in the first floor of the School of Music. We exist to serve the students and faculty of the School of Music, but we have patrons from all over the university. They come to check out scores, study in our beautiful space, produce music in our brand-new music technology studio, or browse through our excellent collections, which embrace a wide variety of materials, from the latest recordings and publications by our faculty to our unique collection of vinyl jazz records.

Dr. Seth Keeton, Assistant Professor of Voice in the School of Music is celebrating the release of an ambitious tool in the Digital Humanities–an online tool for art song discovery called SongHelix. Art song is a genre of classical vocal music intended for performance in recital by one singer and one pianist that prizes direct experience and intimacy.

Pianists of the SummerArts Piano Festival and Competition will grace the stage with their award-winning performances in two special concerts on Jan. 19 and 26, 2019 in Libby Gardner Concert Hall. Every summer the University of Utah hosts the SummerArts Piano Festival and Competition attracting pianists ranging from elementary to college age as they compete for prizes, scholarships, and the chance to perform with a live orchestra. The winners of this year's competition will be showcased alongside the American West Symphony and the Salt Lake Symphony.

The University of Utah Wind Ensemble was the only university ensemble selected to perform at this year's Utah Music Education Association Conference in St. George.

The University of Utah School of Music was ranked #15 out of 370 institutions in the U.S. for veteran friendliness in College Factual’s 2019 national and state rankings. This places the U in the top 5% best music schools for veterans in the nation and is the second year in the row the U has ranked as the best school of music for veterans in Utah.

The School of Music will honor icons of the Salt Lake jazz community at its 18th Annual Camerata Awards Concert Gala on 11/9. Founders of the JazzSLC concert series, Gordon and Connie Hanks, and former U Director of Jazz Studies Henry Wolking will receive their awards at a private dinner and public post-dinner concert in Libby Gardner Concert Hall.

The University of Utah Chamber Choir is known for its impeccable intonation and unique ringing tone quality. Under the direction of Dr. Barlow Bradford, the Chamber Choir has travelled nationally and internationally participating in festivals and competitions, including winning the European Choral Gran Prix Choral Competition in 2015. This year the choir has accepted an invitation to be one of four headlining choirs to be featured in the China International Choral Festival in Beijing.

David Maslanka is one of the most prominent composers of wind band repertoire. Prior to his passing in August 2017, he began work on Symphony No. 10, which was completed by his son Matthew, and will be premiered by the University of Utah Wind Ensemble on their April 3rd concert.

The College of Fine Arts Distinguished Alumni for Music goes to Gregory Brown

The University of Utah’s own Assistant Professor of Musicology, Dr. Catherine Mayes was recently awarded The Westrup Prize. This is awarded annually for "an article of particular distinction" published in "Music & Letters," a leading international musicological journal published by Oxford University Press.

The University of Utah School of Music Graduate String Quartet is in residence in the Saarburg Festival in Germany from July 27- August 7, 2015. Giving the U’s Chamber Music Program great exposure in Germany, the Graduate Quartet, along with three other string students, gave a beautiful performance at the opening reception for the festival on Monday, July 27, 2015.

Professor Robert Baldwin will perform as part of the Lindon Chamber Music Society at the Lindon Community Center on Saturday, January 24 at 7:00 pm. The concert, titled "Viola D'Amore," will feature Baldwin on the viola d'amore in collaboration with Kirsten Gunlogson, Associate Professor of Voice; and, Pamela Palmer Jones, Assistant Professor (Lecturer) of Musicianship.

The Utah Wind Symphony has been selected to play at the 2014 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. This is a very prestigious opportunity. Their performance is slated for December 20, 2014.

The School of Music’s Music Education program consists of renowned faculty with degrees from prestigious schools that actively perform and publish. Three of the Music Education program’s Faculty members, Jessica Nápoles, Associate Professor and Area Head, Joelle Lien, Associate Professor, and Nicole Robinson, Professor, go above their duties as Faculty members, and were elected as respected members of their profession to serve on editorial review boards for several scholarly peer-reviewed journals within the Music Education community.

The College of Fine Arts has honored Barbara Scowcroft as recipient of the 2014/2015 Distinguished Alumni Award in Music. Scowcroft graduated from the U in 2003 with a MM in Conducting and is now a violinist with the Utah Symphony and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Violin Studies at the University of Utah.

Faculty members Pam Jones, Kirsten Gunlogson, and Robert Baldwin, along with DMA student Leslie Richards, were recently featured on KBYU's Highway 89 radio program. The ensemble performed works by Bach, Vivaldi, Sessa, and Ariosti.

With a new school year comes new faces and academic appointments. The School of Music is pleased to welcome Anne McNamara, Raymond C. Morales Postdoctoral Fellow (Trumpet); Nicole R.
