School of Music 2019 Highlights

Musicology professor publishes book

Dr. Jane Hatter’s, “Composing Community in Late Medieval Music: Self Reference, Pedagogy and Practice,” was published by Cambridge University Press. Her book examines the ways that musical community was expressed and promoted through the large repertoire of music about music and musicians extant from the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.

Utah Philharmonia hosts Wuhan University

The Utah Phil welcomed School of Music alum, Dr. Bo Wu, and his students from Wuhan University. Wu is the director of Wuhan University’s orchestra. Together the orchestras performed a unique program of American and Chinese selections during University of Utah’s Chinese Culture week.

Percussion students perform at PASIC

The Percussive Arts Society International Convention is the world’s largest percussion organization. School of Music percussion students performed a concert that included a composition by University of Utah percussion student Chris Bradford during the 2019 convention in Indianapolis, IN.

Flute Choir at NFA

The School of Music’s Flute Choir performed a full concert at the 2019 National Flute Association Convention in SLC.

Wind Ensemble at UMEA

The School of Music’s wind ensemble was a featured ensemble at the 2019 Utah Music Educators Association annual conference in St. George, where it performed a concert with the renowned Boston Brass.

Harp Ensemble in Oregon

The School of Music’s Crimson Harps were invited to tour Portland, Oregon.

Trumpet Area students excel

  • Trumpet Ensemble students performed a new work by trumpet and composition student Jacob Whitchurch at the 2019 National Trumpet Competition in Kentucky.
  • Trumpet DMA student Zach Buie was hired into a tenure track position at Boise State.

Piano Area students excel

  • Graduate student Daniel Tselyakov won the MTNA National Steinway & Sons Young Artist Piano Competition: Southwest Division, he was the Livorno International Piano Competition Audience Prize (and 4th place), and he won the San Jose International Piano Competition Best Contemporary Work prize.
  • DMA student Desireé Gonzalez was hired as a visiting professor at BYU.

Opera Professor performs at the Met

Professor Kirstin Chávez performed at the Metropolitan Opera as Flora in “La Traviata.” The production received positive reviews from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

String Area Head records works by Carl Nielsen

Dr. Hasse Borup recorded the complete works for violin solo and violin and piano by Carl Nielson, with pianist, and former School of Music faculty, Dr. Andrew Staupe. The world-wide release of this landmark CD is scheduled for September 2020 and will mark the first time ever that the complete music for violin solo and violin and piano by Carl Nielsen is released on one CD.

Wycliffe Gordon performs at the U

School of Music hosted trombone legend Wycliffe Gordon. Gordon taught a masterclass and performed with the jazz ensemble and former Jazz Director Kris Johnson.

U Choirs in Hawaii

The University of Utah Chamber Choir traveled to Hawaii to perform and participate in masterclasses at the University of Hawaii and BYU Hawaii.

Annual Camerata Awards

The Camerata Awards Gala featured a wide variety of student performances and honored late faculty member Loel T. Hepworth and his widow, Connie Jo M. Hepworth-Woolston, and Bruce W. Bastian. In 2000, Bastian’s $1.3 million gift of 55 Steinway pianos allowed the School of Music to become a Steinway school and transformed Music at the University of Utah.
