Our Mission

  1. Educate professionally-oriented students in composition, conducting, instrumental performance, jazz studies, music education, musicology, music theory, pedagogy, and vocal performance. Through rigorous musical and academic experiences, students achieve excellence.
  2. Serve the art of music and further the reputation of the School through performance, composition, research and publication, and the participation of its students and faculty in festivals, conferences, competitions, and recordings.
  3. Provide a core of general and diverse music courses and experiences to enhance University students’ appreciation and knowledge of music as a distinct art form, and as it relates to history, society, culture, and the other arts.
  4. Function as the State’s flagship institution serving as a center for intellectual, educational, and cultural musical activities within the university, community, region, and nation.

Our History

Over the past five years, few public research universities have risen in stature as quickly for both academic excellence and the creation of life-changing technological and medical innovation than the University of Utah. With the urban and cultural advantages of Salt Lake City out its front door, and the majestic Wasatch Mountains and some of the best outdoor recreational opportunities in the world in its backyard, the University of Utah is the state’s oldest and largest public institution of higher education, currently hosting 31,000 students. In 2011, the University furthered its mission of excellence by joining one of the country’s most prestigious conferences— both athletically and academically—in the Pac-12.

The University of Utah was established in 1850 and is the state’s oldest and largest institution of higher education. Salt Lake City is the home of the University and is consistently rated among the best places to live by Places Rated Almanac. The University is a major research institution and offers the BA, BM, MA, MM, DMA, and PhD music degrees with programs in composition, conducting, jazz studies, music education, music technology, music theory, musicology, and performance. The School of Music is one of six academic units in the College of Fine Arts. Its excellent facilities accommodate over 375 majors and 90 faculty members. More history.
