All undergraduate SoM students receive academic advising from the College of Fine Arts Academic Advisors https://www.finearts.utah.edu/meet-the-advisors)

The CFA Academic Advisors partner with the SoM to present in SoM convocations and classes to ensure that students receive accurate, relevant, and timely advising. 

During their first term first-year students to meet with the CFA academic advisors to complete their first-term MAP advising requirement and register for their next semester of courses.

Graduation 

Requirements
  • Piano Proficiency Requirement: All music students must pass the Piano Proficiency Examination. The exam is administered at the beginning of each semester. All students should be enrolled for Keyboard (MUSC 1150, 1160, 2150, and 2160) each semester until this requirement is fulfilled or until the piano proficiency exam is passed. Private piano study may not be substituted for Class Piano or the Piano Proficiency Exam. For BM Jazz Composition or Jazz Performance majors whose primary instrument is piano, please refer to the Jazz Piano Placement Requirements for Jazz Piano Majors document for information on placement out of MUSC 2181 and 2182.
  • Grade Minimum Requirement a grade of C or better is required for all music courses. Grades of C- or below in Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music degree programs and Minor in Music program will not satisfy this requirement.
  • University of Utah Graduation Requirements. The University of Utah requires additional general education and bachelor’s degree requirements for graduation.

*Summer graduates are included in the following year’s Spring Convocation Programs. Example: Summer 2023 graduates are included in the Spring 2024 Convocation Programs.

Step 1) Go to Registrar’s Office Graduation & Commencement webpage for information about Graduation and Commencement.

Step 2) Run Degree Audit and be sure that all sections are showing up with green check marks.

Step 3) Schedule an appointment with a College of Fine Arts Advisor if there are any incomplete sections (sections showing up in red on your DARS).

Step 4) If there are any questions regarding transfer credit or Exceptions to Policy, meet with Director of Undergraduate Studies (email).

Step 5)  Apply for graduation through your CIS page. Be sure to apply by the deadline.

Step 6) The system will only allow you to apply online if you apply before the deadline. If you are late, you will need to fill out the paper form and submit to the Registrar.

Step 1) Go to Registrar’s Office Graduation & Commencement webpage for information about Graduation and Commencement.

Step 2) Apply for graduation and follow other steps and deadlines.

Students may begin to purchase regalia online through the Campus Store website beginning March 1, 2024.  Regalia can be shipped directly to students for an additional cost, or will be available for in-person pick up at the Campus Store the week of April 4-6, 2024.

If students would like more information or wish to order in person, they may attend the annual Grad Fair held at the Campus Store April 4-6, 2024The last day for students to order regalia online for shipping is April 25. Students may still order regalia online or in the Campus Store after that date, but will have to select the option to pick up their regalia at the Campus Store.  

Students with questions should refer to the Campus Store FAQs page or stop by the Grad Fair held at the Campus Store April 4-6, 2024. 

*Please note that student regalia may only be purchased, not rented.

If you are planning to walk and would like to have your friends or family be there, please request your tickets by TBD . Each graduating student may request up to TBD guest tickets until TBD. Students who do not complete and submit the survey by TBD may not receive guest tickets. Do not submit more than one survey. Please RSVP even if you are not planning on attending. Both types of responses are greatly appreciated and help with the planning efforts.

TICKET MUST BE requested

Please know that seating in Kingsbury Hall is limited, so the number of tickets each graduate requests in advance is very important. Additional guests are able to may view the ceremony via livestream in an overflow venue nearby. Friends and family not on campus will also be able to enjoy the Convocation ceremony remotely via internet livestream. (A link will be provided as soon as it’s available).

Please visit CFA's convocation site for information about graduation day events and the graduation checklist. Check it regularly for new information. You will also receive updates via UMail, so please check it often, especially as we get to the days closer to the ceremony.
