A Tribute to Daynes Music
By Cassie Taylor
For more than 160 years, Daynes Music has stood as one of Utah’s most enduring cultural institutions.
Founded in 1862, even before Utah’s statehood, it grew from a small frontier shop into the oldest family‑owned music store in the state and one of the oldest in the nation. Through four decades, Daynes Music shaped the musical landscape of Utah, supporting students, teachers, performers, and communities. For the University of Utah, this partnership has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Because of Daynes Music and Skip Daynes’s vision and advocacy, the University of Utah proudly became an All‑Steinway School, a distinction that reflects not only excellence in instruments but a shared commitment to artistic rigor and student success. This achievement is woven into the identity of the School of Music and continues to elevate the experience of every pianist who studies, practices, and performs on our campus.
Skip was the fourth-generation owner of Daynes Music, and a pillar for the arts in Utah — a leader whose unwavering belief in music education touched countless lives. As an original partner and steadfast supporter of the University Piano Outreach Program (affectionately known as UPOP), Skip helped bring high‑quality instruments and meaningful musical opportunities to children who otherwise would not have had access. During his 23 years of service on the School of Music Advisory Board, he not only promoted arts in schools, but offered thoughtful guidance for artistic excellence at the U. Following his passing in 2024, his wife, Susan, joined the board and continues to serve as a valued member.
Skip's passionate advocacy for arts and music in public elementary schools reflected his conviction that every child deserves the chance to discover their creative voice. Skip’s legacy lives on in every rehearsal room, every classroom, and every young musician who finds confidence and joy at the piano.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Susan Daynes, Kerwin Ipsen, and the dedicated employees of Daynes Music, past and present. Your work has supported thousands of students and educators. You have tuned, delivered, repaired, advised, encouraged, and celebrated alongside us. You have been trusted partners in every sense of the word, and the University of Utah is stronger because of your commitment.
Though Daynes Music closes its doors, its influence will continue to resonate across our campus and throughout the state. The instruments you placed in our halls, the programs you helped build, and the young musicians you inspired will carry your legacy forward. From all of us at the University of Utah School of Music: thank you for your decades of service, your belief in the arts, and your extraordinary generosity. Your legacy will live on in the music we make.
