Catherine Mayes: The Westrup Prize

The University of Utah’s own Assistant Professor of Musicology, Dr. Catherine Mayes was recently awarded The Westrup Prize. This is awarded annually for "an article of particular distinction" published in Music & Letters, a leading international musicological journal published by Oxford University Press. A prolific scholar, Dr. Mayes has presented her research on exoticism and national styles in music of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries at numerous national and international conferences. She won this year's award for her article "Eastern European National Music as Concept and Commodity at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century," which appeared in the February 2014 issue of Music & Letters. In making the award, the journal's Board noted that they were impressed by "the clarity of her presentation" and " her innovative approach to the subject."
