Biography
Dr. Olivia Tucker is an Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education at the
University of Utah. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses, supervises student
teachers, and guides student research while maintaining an active schedule as a clinician,
adjudicator, and researcher. With expertise in music teacher agency, teacher preparation,
and instrumental music instruction and evaluation, Dr. Tucker regularly publishes
original scholarship in leading peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music
Education, International Journal of Music Education, Music Educators Journal, and Update. She regularly presents at regional, national, and international conferences and
holds leadership positions in the American Educational Research Association and the Society for Music Teacher Education.
Dr. Tucker received a PhD and a master's degree in music education from the University
of North Texas and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from Howard Payne
University. Originally from Texas, Dr. Tucker previously held positions as a middle
school band director, private flute instructor, and assistant director of a New Horizons
senior citizen band in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Prior to her appointment at the
U, Dr. Tucker was an assistant professor and coordinator of music education at the
University of New Mexico.
