Biography
Susan Duehlmeier's performances have been described as"glistening"(TyrolerZeitung) and "dripping with drama (Pinault Review). A listed Steinway Artist, she has appeared many times with the Utah Symphony and with such orchestras as the Boston Symphony, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Radio Orchestra, and the Armenian Philharmonic, the Westminster Orchestra and the Salt Lake Symphony. She was chosen as the “American Classical Artist” at the Fourth International Shanghai Radio Music Festival in China and appeared in three solo recitals in Shanghai. Additional performances include recitals on theDame Myra Hess Series in Chicago and Los Angeles, performances in Nanjing China, in Madrid Spain, in the Autumn Festival in Warsaw, at Dvorak Hall in Prague, at the International Piano Workshop at Oxford University in England, theClassical Music Seminar in Eisenstadt, Austria, the International Piano Workshopin Glasgow Scotland, the Jerusalem Center, the International Piano Festival in Greece, and and the Friends of Music Chamber Series in Connecticut. With faculty colleague Bonnie Gritton, the duo was featured at the National Women's Convention hosted by Senator Orrin Hatch and were also chosen to perform on the Utah Arts Council Performing Arts Tour 2007-2008. She has performed numerous original compositions by composers with local ties including Henry Wolking, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Jeff Manookian, and Leroy Robertson. She is currently writing a chapter on the music of Vladimir Ussachevsky for a book on Russian-immigrant composers in America to be published in 2008.
She was awarded "The Best of State" award (BOSS) in 2004 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for her performance with colleague Bonnie Gritton for their performance of the Wolking concerto for two pianos titled Letting Midnight Out on Bail. The duo were winners in the Web Concert Hall and Buono and Bradshaw Piano Competitions in 2007. They have five CD's available through MMC, Centaur and Albany labels. (www.Duehlmeier-Gritton.com)
Since her appointment in the School of Music, she has been Piano Area Chair where she is designated a "Presidential Teaching Scholar." She co-chairs the SummerArts Piano Festival and Competition which provides performance and educational opportunities for pianists. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, on the nominating committee of the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival and is Vice President of the Pianists of the Americas organization in New York.
In addition to her university teaching, she maintains a class of private students who have won prizes in all major state-wide competitions as well as national and international competitions including the Calgary International Piano Competition, International Recording Competition in New York, Young Keyboard Artists competition at Oberlin College, the Midland-Odessa Competition in Texas, the William S. Boyd Competition in Georgia, the Louisiana National Competition, the Fort Collins Competition in Colorado and Kingsville Texas International Piano Competition and many others. She has had many students appear in the "Salute to Youth" concerts with the Utah Symphony as well as with the Salt Lake Symphony, the Murray Symphony, the Grand Junction Symphony, the Midland-Odessa Symphony to name a few. She was featured, with her students, on a KUED special broadcast detailing research at the University of Utah and is recognized as a Master Teacher by the National Music Teachers Association. She was designated a Founder's Fellow at the 2007 International Music Teachers Association Convention in Canada. She is in demand as an adjudicator and has judged the Gina Bachauer International Competition, the Missouri International Competition (chairman of the jury), and many local and regional competitions. She has given numerous master classes and lectures including those at the Missouri International Competition, the International Piano Festival in Scotland, and Shanghai, China.
Dr. Duehlmeier received her D.M.A. degree from Boston University where she studied with Leonard Shure and Theodore Letvin and performed in the master classes of Leon Fleisher, Karl Schnabel, Jorg Demus, Gyorgy Sebok and harpsichord with Igor Kipnis. She received her B.Mus and M.Mus at the University of Utah under Gladys Gladstone Rosenberg.
