Biography

Zhangyu (April)  Chen is an experienced performer, instructor, and accompanist. She has been received piano courses when she was 10. In her later music career, she is qualified to receive a professional education at an affiliated middle school of the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, and later then, she finished her bachelor's degree at the same conservatory. Currently, she is a doctoral student working on piano performance at the University of Utah with Dr. Jie Lu.

Zhangyu is a comprehensive pianist; she mainly focuses on the solo piano and works on two pianos, chamber music, accompaniment, and pedagogy. She earned the teaching assistant position during her doctoral and master’s programs. She teaches both private lessons and group lessons in the preparatory division. 

Zhangyu has been rewarded in the Summer Arts Competition at the University of Utah, the Yangtze River Piano Competition, and the Beethoven Sonata Competition in China. 

She’s proud to be a UMTA Collegiate Student Chapter Organization member. Also, she’s honored to be a guest in Utah Music Teachers Association and had her speech consecutive for two years.

With the purpose of creating more opportunities for students, She started an organization called Virtuoso Pianists. As the president, she aims to invite well-known professors to share their astonishing performance styles and pedagogy methods with the musicians. 

 

Teaching Philosophy

For my teaching method, I advocate for creating subjects that require students to engage with creativity, imagination, inspiration, and encouragement. 

I believe that every student has a unique personality, and my goal is to reach their individual goals with my passion, patience, and professional knowledge. Offering a positive musical environment for students to establish their confidence, discipline, and good learning habits.
