School of Music to Feature Small Ensembles in Upcoming Honors Concert
The School of Music showcases some of its finest student performers in one dazzling evening, which will be offered on live streaming for the first time in School of Music history. The Honors Concert celebrates some of the school’s best performers while honoring scholarship donors and educators alike.
The show is a potpourri of standout performances from several of the U’s major ensembles. From renaissance to late twentieth-century works, this concert is unusual for the astonishing variety it offers. The Early Music Ensemble, directed by Lisa Chaufty will perform English works from the Renaissance and Baroque. The New Music Ensemble, directed by Igor Iachimciuc, presents a movement from Harbison’s Simple Daylight, and Martino’s Cinque fragmenti for oboe and double bass.
Performing groups include premier quartets and talented soloists. The O.C. Tanner Honors String Quartet plays Mozart’s “Dissonance” quartet, and Mt. Olympus Waters Honors String Quartet presents a movement from Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op. 44 No. 2. The Graduate Vocal Quartet performs crowd-pleasing favorites such as “The Flower Duet” from Lakmé and “I’ll Be Seeing You.” Featured piano soloists will also take the stage. Ran Duan plays a Liszt etude, and Nate Wambolt presents a sonata movement by Ginastera.
Departmental ensembles are also spotlighted. The Runnin’ fl’Utes, directed by Tiffany Sedgley, display the charm and versatility of the flute with McMichael’s The Academie of Dance, and Cathy Clayton leads the Crimson Harps in Grandjany’s “Aria in a Classic Style.” A duo from the Percussion Ensemble performs Snowden’s riveting A Man with a Gun Lives Here.
You won’t want to miss these standout performances, and with live streaming, you won’t have to! The concert will be streamed live, here. After the performance, the event will be archived for later viewing at this link.
