Biography

Cellist Stephen Emerson holds a B.A. degree in music from California State University, Long Beach, a Master of Music degree in performance from the Hartt School of Music, and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Utah. His former cello teachers include Naoum Benditzky and Raya Garbousova. Mr. Emerson recently concluded a 27 year tenure as Associate Principal cellist with the Utah Symphony and has been a member of the Hartford Symphony and Principal cellist of the Hartford Chamber Orchestra. He is an active chamber music player and has appeared as soloist with the Utah Symphony and the Long Beach Bach Festival.

A former member of the music faculty of Brigham Young University and cellist of its Deseret Piano Quartet, he has been a member of the University of Utah adjunct faculty since 1988. Besides solo, chamber music, and orchestral performance and pedagogy, Mr. Emerson's interests include "Inner Game" techniques and performance anxiety management.

Mr. Emerson is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker engaged in a private psychotherapy practice (http://www.stephenemerson.com/) helping individuals deal with a wide variety of life challenges including performance anxiety.
