“Without a program such as U Piano Outreach, our students would receive little, if no, music education.” — Craig Ruesch, former Principal
Thanks to annual fundraising by the Salt Lake Education Foundation, the U Piano Outreach Program started at Newman in 2009 and serves 60 children annually who receive four classes a weeks for 30 weeks a year. Each forty-five minute daily class includes twenty minutes of keyboard instruction, followed by twenty minutes of activities that reinforce notes, techniques and theory.
Parents sign their children up to participate on a first come, first served basis, starting at back-to-school night. At Newman Elementary, more than 75% of students’ families live below the federal poverty level, 65% of student body comes from ethnically or racially diverse backgrounds, and 40% of student body are English language learners.
At the end of the semester, program participants perform their recital pieces for their families and the entire school. Top students are invited to perform at an additional recital at the School of Music’s Dumke Recital Hall
