Newly Admitted Graduate Students

Welcome! We are looking forward to your arrival at the University of Utah!

1) Before Orientation

2) Take appropriate placement exams.

All incoming graduate students must take a placement exam in music theory and music history.

Music Theory

In response to the COVID-19 Health Emergency, the Graduate Advisory Exam in Music Theory will be administered online for the 2020/21 academic year. A six-hour time block (4:00 to 10:00 p.m.) will open on Thursday, August 20 during which students must logon and take the exam (students should plan on spending ca. 75 minutes to complete the exam). Complete details about the logon process will be sent out via email at the beginning of August; in the meantime, students should continue to review both diatonic & chromatic harmony as well as musical form. Please note that communicating or disseminating any information about the exam itself constitutes academic misconduct - see University Policy 6-400: Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities - and subject to any penalties stated therein.
