Derek Myler completed his MM in Music Theory at the University of Utah in 2018. His thesis, “A Schenkerian View of Ascending Lines and Prolongation in the Fugal Expositions of J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier” was supervised by Dr. Michael Chikinda. His research focuses on fugal theory—with special regard to Schenkerian perspectives on the analysis of fugue—and on the music of Charles Ives. Derek has presented recent research at conferences in Madison, WI, Seattle, WA, and Provo, UT. Aside from his teaching duties at the University of Utah, Derek is on faculty at the Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City where he teaches music theory; he also maintains an active private studio.
In addition to teaching, Derek is active as a music director and conductor for area theatres, as a vocalist and vocal coach, as a collaborative pianist, and as a frequent adjudicator. An occasional composer, Derek’s works have been premiered in the United States and Europe, and recent choral music is published by Walton Music.
