Jazz Combos

U of U Jazz Combos typically perform original jazz classics by such noteworthy artists as Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter, American songbook standards by composers including George Gershwin and Cole Porter, and new compositions by undergraduate and graduate jazz majors.

Jazz combo playing provides students with jazz music’s equivalent of the chamber music experience: teaching them to make music in a highly detailed fashion, with each musician’s part critical to the success of the overall performance. Combo participants also grow familiar with the common repertoire played by jazz professionals worldwide, whether on a concert stage, a jazz club or a social gig.

In addition to four on-campus concerts a year, members of the jazz combo program participate annually in regional jazz festivals, including in-state events, as well as festivals performances in Colorado, Idaho and Nevada.
