About The Workshop

The University of Utah chamber Music Workshop is a focused five-day workshop designed for the serious string and piano pre-college and college student. The Workshop is an ideal environment to help the up-an-coming young artist explore the fine art of chamber music playing under the expert guidance by members of the University of Utah School of Music String and Piano faculties as well as exciting guest artists.  The Workshop takes place in stunning Libby Gardner Hall at the University of Utah School of Music.

Apart from intensive coachings on the assigned repertoire, each participant will be involved in sessions designed to explore new and unique angles to musicianship and performance, such as improvisation, movement, conducting, singing and more. A typical daily schedule will include two coachings, one rehearsal and one group session or performance (see sample schedule on right side of this page).

Pre-formed groups or individuals between the ages 12 and 26 are wlecome to apply! Individual participants will be placed in groups by audition.

The University of Utah Chamber Music Workshop is an unique opportunity for the young artist to improve his or her musicianship in a professional setting and stimulating environment.

 


Audition Guidelines
& Repertoire

Strings (violin, viola, cello): One movement of solo Bach and one movement of contrasting style.

Piano: Two pieces of contrasting style,preferably one by Bach and one from the
Romantic period.

Pre-formed Ensemble Repertoire: Two contrastic movements from the standard literature, one each from the Classical and Romantic periods.

Total audition time should be
at least 10 minutes

Participation Fee: $250 (which includes lunch and tickets for faculty performances)
